Lifestyle and Risk Factors

Exercise: Regular physical activity not only supports general health and well being, it also has been shown to reduce the risk for developing Age-related Cataracts and Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Please check with your physician before starting an exercise regimen.

Risk Factors for Developing Eye Disease:
Obesity is linked to an increased risk for developing diabetic eye disease, cataracts, glaucoma and AMD. Cigarette smoking increases the likelihood of developing AMD and continued smoking with AMD increases the risk of progression of this sight threatening disease. Family history and light colored eyes are also risk factors for developing AMD.

UV 400 Eye Protection:
While sunlight provides a much needed source of Vitamin D, overexposure can have an adverse affect on our skin and eyes. Use sunglasses which provide UV and blue light protection labeled: UV 400. Also eating foods high in the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin act as a natural internal sunscreen.
